Facilities/Special Events

Kitchen

The Pre-school kitchen is a fully equipped child sized facility. Teachers use the kitchen to reinforce skills taught in the classroom. Children, with adult supervision, prepare and eat food items that reflect the letter or sound, shape, or color currently taught during that week. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for this valuable program please contact the JFK volunteer coordinator.

Library

To develop a “love for reading” all classrooms visit the Library Media Center each week to listen to stories. We encourage parents to visit the LMC and borrow books for your Pre-school child.

Play Structures

A variety of play structures in the Pre-school assist in the development of large motor skills. During recess time, 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM, these play structures provide opportunities for students to develop their muscle strength, coordination and balance. Large sand boxes provide alternative sources of creative play and opportunities for students to interact cooperatively with those other than their classmates.

Cross Age Tutors

Every day grade four and five students from the Elementary school assist students in each Pre-school classroom for forty-five minutes. The Pre-school children benefit from this program in many ways. The cross age tutors model English vocabulary and encourage the Pre-school students to do so as well. The one-one-one assistance with the Elementary students encourages the Pre-school students to take risks. This mentoring relationship creates a sense of community between the two schools, Pre-school and Elementary.

Pre-school Student Support Services

The Student Support Service Department works full time in different aspects in the Pre-school. Observation and follow up is available for new students. Those requiring special support, benefit from the guidance and suggestions provided by the Student Support Service personnel. The Student Support Service Department is also involved with the admission and readmission process, formation of new classes, low academic achievement, personal aspects and emotional support.

Pre-school Office

The office administrator in the Pre-school is Martha Salinas. This friendly voice at the end of the telephone is fully bilingual and willing to assist any of your questions or concerns. Please don’t hesitate to call Martha at 218-0075 extension 1601.

Security / Credential / Entrance - Dismissal Times

The school hours in Pre-school are 8:00 AM to 12:10 PM. Students enter the Pre-school gate on Pinos. Credentials are issued to all parents (temporary ones to new parents). After the first week you must have your credential to leave with your child at the dismissal time. If you forget your credential a “pass” will be issued at the Pre-school office however, for security reasons only after the Pre-school gate has been closed after 12:30 PM

Paramedic

Children requiring medical assistance are taken to the Pre-school office where they are seen immediately by a paramedic. A doctor is on call each day for any serious situations. All Pre-school children are required to complete a medical history information sheet to alert staff to any pre-existing medical conditions and allergies.

Lost and Found

All lost and found articles are collected and placed in the Pre-school office. Periodically these items are sent to the main Lost and Found area located near the Jaguars Shop. Eventually items are donated to one of the schools that JFK currently is partnered with as a community service project. Please write your child’s name on all clothing items especially the PE uniform.

Flag Ceremonies / Special Events

Every Monday morning the Pre-school hosts their weekly Flag Ceremony honoring both the American and Mexican cultures. Students wear their J.F.K. Physical Education uniforms and learn the patriotic songs and form to accompany them. This weekly event is a forum to discuss upcoming activities and celebrations and to gather everyone in the spirit “as one”. To mark your calendar for these upcoming special events and activities occurring in the Pre-school, click on "School Year 2007-2008" to review the special events calendar.
