Say Something

Two years ago, we introduced the Say Something program in our Middle and High Schools. This program was created by a US national non-profit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.
Say Something has proved to be a highly successful prevention program across the US. The assumption is that at least one other person knows of most threats of violence and other types of risky behaviors before the incident occurs.

With the growth of social media, communities are finding new ways to hear cries for help from children, as well as the proud boasts of those participating in risky behavior that feel compelled to share with their friends online. There are so many platforms and so many opportunities for social connections online that schools cannot simply rely on watching students for erratic behavior in the classrooms any more.

Say Something teaches students how to look for warning signs of risky or threatening behavior. It helps teach us that we are all safer as a school and community if we help each other identify risks that we may face or that our friends and others may be facing themselves for the choices they make.
If we know that someone is putting themselves or others at risk by their behavior, we should not be silent witnesses. Bullying, domestic abuse, drink/driving, drugs, eating disorders, stealing and a whole host of other behaviors put someone somewhere at risk. It is a shared responsibility of us all to report these things so that we can help victims, and help to prevent their repetition.

We have a confidential reporting system through our JFK Website to advise us of risky behavior and situations in which we can help students at risk. Advising a trusted adult is not telling tales, it is a way to assume responsibility and permit us to intervene when there are concerns about student well-being.
Our hope is to build a culture of looking out for one another and reporting possible concerns when someone sees, reads, or hears something, so that we can all help avoid tragedies and inappropriate behavior.

So far, Say Something has proved very helpful at JFK and we have intervened in many situations such as bullying, eating disorders, problems at home and even provided guidance for students simply looking for help or advice by using our online reporting system.
We will continue to work on helping all students understand the importance of looking out for each other and we hope that more families will help us share the message that the school can help in many ways and that silence is not usually the best solution.

My experience: Miss Inge

Working on these affairs is very rewarding because it’s them who can move consciences, innovate, reinvent the world, with their freshness that compromises you to participate and look for new ways. They are a look-out and teachers, because it is our ACTIONS that give strength of what we teach them and they learn.
That’s the magic in our job, it’s them who come up with faith and participation that can make CHANGES beyond our imagination. There's always someone who surprises us and shares with us that when they got home the tried an experiment, that worked.

We are always surprised by the ones who go back home and try it, and prove that it worked out of Lab Class as well! They tell us that they will tell their cousins of what they will propose to create a better consciousness and help to the planet. Or that they will write a letter to business owners that pack things with so much plastic so they can do it in a greener way for everyone.

I thank Miss Luza and this school for the changes I’ve learned since my kids were pioneers in the Ecoclub to my learning with each generation.
I wish you enjoy more than me, all the discoverments, learnings and proposals that our children will present at the Environmental Fair, and especially make all the small changes to achieve the dream of a better world.

With love,
Miss Inge

Dangers on the internet

As we are all aware, the internet is both a wonderful and potentially dangerous place. Internet filters are important and highly recommended (the JFK has this in place), but they are only one part of the solution. The only proven strategy to keep our children safe is to monitor what content they are accessing and to have open communication with them. Please remember that almost all social media sites require that children are 13 years old before using them. This is not by accident. Children in Elementary School should be running, playing, and reading in the afternoon, not chatting. This is why intelligent devices are prohibited in Elementary School during the school day. We have our own devices for the students to use under the supervision of teachers.

Children are by nature inquiring. For example, if they hear about an online “challenge” telling them to do dangerous things, they may try to access it out of curiosity. According to the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Company), there is one recent “challenge” that while dangerous, parents are actually making it worse by spreading rumors about it on their own social media such as Facebook. Parents are the most responsible for this one particular "challenge" going viral. This may cause more harm instead of what parents are intending to do which is keep children safe.

On a similar note, Youtube is most appropriately used by adults and teens. For Elementary School aged children, Youtube Kids is a better option. Even still, sometimes there are malicious people who embed inappropriate content on channels directed at children. On rare occasions, they may be watching a cartoon on Youtube or Youtube Kids and an inappropriate message may pop up. This is why I repeat what I wrote previously: the only proven strategy to keep our children safe is to monitor what content they are accessing and to have open communication with them. Your child will tell you what they saw, and you can take immediate steps to help; first of all, by making sure your child is ok emotionally, and secondly, by flagging the video. YouTube is getting much better at immediately deleting such content. Finally, remember that we are teaching JFK children to never share personal information online with anyone. Please repeat this important message at home.

Middle School

Hello MS Community!

I want to extend congratulations to Valentina de los Cobos Sarachaga in 6th grade who won third place in the event “Girls, boys, and teens in Government,” a state-wide competition based on public speaking and collaboration. After the event, she shared something so valuable that she learned from the experience: it feels good to be proud of others when they win. What a great way to look at life, with grace and acceptance. Thanks Valentina!

Remember that yesterday and today we have Stanford testing from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. Students need to bring a book to read if they finish early, and they are allowed to drink water during the test.

Teachers are currently wrapping up the trimester, which ends next week March 13, and I am so happy to say that students have been showing their responsibility by emailing and talking to teachers about their grades. You can also check Powerschool with your child to talk about study habits and other ways they can become more organized. If you need help with the site or the app on your phone, please email [email protected].
Have a great week!

Stanford Standardized Exam

Over the next week, our students will be taking the Stanford Standardized Exam from the United States. This exam, combined with the PSAT and SAT, provides us with data about the level of our implementation of the US-based part of our curriculum as an American school in México. It also provides us with important individual student data that we use when designing personalized learning interventions to ensure all students can be successful at JFK.

We are also approaching the end of grading period 3, the week of March 11th. I would like to thank all staff and students for their dedication to excellence during the start of second semester as we continue to Achieve the Extraordinary!
