Events this month!

Thanks to all of our parents and students for your cooperation in helping keep our school traffic flowing effectively during drop-off in the morning and pick-up in the afternoon. By following the guidance of our adult and student volunteers, you are helping make it safer for everyone. Please continue to avoid double parking, as that restricts the flow of traffic. With your patience and help, we are able to see everyone safely enter and leave the campus in a relatively short period of time.

There has been a lot going on at school lately, as usual – Stanford standardized testing, student trips, athletic competitions, Parent Talks, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and many others.

Please be sure to check the school-wide calendar frequently to make sure you don’t miss anything. Some of the things that are coming up this month are the Art Exhibition (March 13-15), the Kinder Spring Parade (March 15), ASOMEX Soccer (March 16), the school-wide Kermesse (March 23), and the Elementary School Play (March 26-27).
We hope to see you there!

Our Journey: Tech in the Classrooms

We invite all our JFK parents to hear more details about the implementation of the Tech in the Classroom plan. You all received an email earlier with some information about this exciting step forward in Our Journey to Achieve the Extraordinary, and now we would like to offer everyone the opportunity to learn more about it.

Come hear how all sections of the school will be participating in this school-wide initiative. Find out how your students will be involved, what the school has done and will be doing next, and what expectations we have for you parents. After the presentation, members of the EdTech Team will be available to answer any questions you might have.

Interacting with nature

Interacting with nature and studying it from a young age, encourages the development of critical thinking and research skills as well as an emotional bond to other living beings. With their projects for the Environmental Fair, this year our Preschool students are practicing their skills of observation, prediction, and analysis as well as developing their concepts of sequence, growth, change, patterns and classification.

It has been shown that children that have either direct or indirect (documentaries, nature magazines, etc.) contact with nature are more willing to value it afterwards and to recognize the importance of conserving biodiversity. I think the most important aspect of creating these kinds of spaces and opportunities for our students is precisely to foster their engagement with nature either directly (in the Greenhouse, the Eco-Club) or indirectly and as an object of study (Science Lab) and in this way generate positive experiences that will lead them to appreciate it.

Elementary School

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is located in the Elementary School ground floor between the main office and the Art/Music classrooms,
Lost and Found hours are:

Beginning of day: 7:30-8 am (students)
Recess time: 11-11:30am (students)
End of day: 2:20 to 3 pm (students and parents)

This Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the Student Council will attempt to get lost items into the hands of their owners. Besides saying “thank you,” children can make a voluntary donation of between $1 peso and $5 pesos to the AMANC cause when something of theirs is returned to them. Teachers will also be reminding students to check Lost and Found on their way to art or music class this week and next week.

Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, March 20 and March 21 all lost items will be displayed in the ES patio area. Please come by after school to collect items (I also recommend to parents that if you deliver a lost item to your child, that they take a small symbolic amount of money out of their allowance to donate to AMANC). This is to say “thank you” to you for helping them, and it may help build a bit more responsibility and consciousness to take care of belongings.
The following Monday, March 25, any unclaimed items will be donated to the Sierra Gorda foundation. High value items without names are left with Miss Ana Paula in the ES office and after two months if they are still unclaimed will be donated to a civil association. Remember that you can post pictures of lost or found items here: http://bit.ly/ES-TPC

Experiential learning

Hello Middle School Community,

Experiential learning is learning that takes place while the learner is doing something, like completing a task, conducting an experiment, or solving a problem. Interdisciplinary learning is that in which students apply transferable skills and knowledge in more than one class. One of the ways that our school stands out from the others is how our MYP teachers combine interdisciplinary learning with experiential learning.

Three students in the sixth grade, Eugenia Ruy Díaz, Ricardo Calzada and Carina Fernández have achieved great success in the authentic learning experience “Olimpiada de Conocimiento Infantil 2019,” where they are able to showcase their collaborative and public speaking talents. We are proud to know they will be representing our school on Friday in the next level of the competition. Congratulations, students, and good luck!

Right now, our 8th graders are learning that bowling balls can float in water and that there is a real-life connection between human migration and statistics. Our seventh graders are learning how literature can teach us about human rights abuses, and how stories can lead to policies, plus how to predict personal achievements in fitness. And our sixth graders are looking at how historical events can be right and wrong at the same time, plus how to collaborate to produce texts.
These types of experiences in the classroom help our students develop the IB Community Profile: they become risk-takers, thinkers, reflective, and good communicators in order to succeed in these units. They also help our students fulfill the Vision of our school: to achieve the extraordinary.

Students representing JFK

This year, I have accompanied our students on all four generation trips, the last one being the 10th Grade Trip to Valle de Bravo. On each trip, our students have consistently received praised from our tour companies, guest speakers, museum operators, guides, and community leaders for their inquisitiveness, respect, behavior, and maturity. I’ve enjoyed seeing our students represent JFK and model the IB Community Profile in ways that make me proud when we leave school for experiential learning.
It is one more way to we carry out our mission to lead, serve, and create beauty.

Theory of Knowledge TED Talks

Dear Parents,

I am very excited to invite you to our annual Theory of Knowledge TED Talks! The presentations will take place on March 21 and 22 from 7 am till 5pm. Please join us as your child showcases their understanding of real-life controversies of knowledge and breaks down complex problems to arrive at innovative solutions. A schedule of what day and time your child will be presenting will be posted on PowerSchool and in the high school office as of March 19. Come be part of our learning community: where we will lead, serve and create beauty!
