Our Journey: Tech in the Classrooms

The Coffee Talk given last week on our plans for bringing more technology in to the classrooms was really exciting. As part of our commitment to continual improvement, Our Journey to Achieve the Extraordinary clearly requires some considerable effort and investment in technology for the whole school.

We have already started to make progress with improving the technology infrastructure and have a committee of parents and experts established to support us with this. Behind the scenes as well, our Edtech Team of staff are working to train teachers and build new programs across the school, and at the Coffee Talk the plans to introduce Chromebooks in 6th grade in August and other plans were announced to parents.

Details of purchasing options and actual requirements will be explained in the relevant sections to the grade levels by the principals in meetings in the near future. In this first year, no purchases are required, but in some grade levels there will be recommendations and support plans set up to help.
In the meantime, I would like to share our main objectives as shown in the Coffee Talk and a link to the full presentation for those that missed it.

Environmental Fair Update

We are very happy to share once again what the different sections in school are working on for the upcoming Environmental Fair. The date is very near, hope you can all join us on April 12th to see all the projects our students have been working on as well as other speakers with really interesting proposals regarding our environment. This time Mr. Caleb Ulliman tells us about the Middle School environmental project :

Middle school will be working on the reduction of the use of plastics. They will create a campaign that will bring awareness of to the impacts of using plastics. Students need to be aware of their actions, what better way to bring awareness than to have students spread this awareness to their community.

SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical

"SpongeBob" visits the JFK auditorium on Tuesday night at 8pm and there are two shows on Wednesday: the matinee at 6pm and the final show at 8pm. Don't miss it!
Also, Wednesday will be the last day for Lost and Found.

Reminder to all JFK PS and ES students and families: We are in the final stages of being certified as a PYP school. Next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we need to complete rigorous and day long professional development courses in the PYP. Thus, we remind you and appreciate your support that Thursday, April 4 and Friday April 5 are Professional Days for teachers and no school for students. On behalf of our outstanding teaching staff, a big thank you to all JFK families for understanding.

Service Habits

Hello Middle School Community,

We had such a good time at the Kermesse on Saturday! Students and staff lined up to soak their favorite teachers and administrators at the NJHS dunk tank. The 7th graders washed 57 cars for their Social Service project! This would not have been possible without the careful guidance and support of their teachers and the Social Service coordinator, Miss Paola Regalado, nor without our family’s support at home in developing service habits.

Part of what makes Service Habits so powerful is the transformation from extrinsic motivation towards empathic motivation. This semester, 8th grade students have been pen pals with students in Amealco, exchanging letters. Soon we will take a field trip so they can meet and teach each other in fun workshops like embroidering, physics, and otomi! Getting to know others as humans is a vital step in breaking the cycle of poverty, as well as developing empathic motivation to serve others.

This week is a full week for students, and our Professional Development day is on April 5th.

I hope everyone has a great week!

TOK presentations

I would like to congratulate our 12th grade generation for amazing, intelligent, and profound TOK presentations last week. TOK - Theory of Knowledge - is a course students in the full IB Diploma take during 11th and 12th grade that deals with truth and the ways we search for it. This year, we recorded presentations with the goal of publishing them on our JFK Youtube Channel for the community to see. We hope to eventually turn these into JFK Ted Talks in the future!
