Parent Talk: "Salvando nuestras vidas"

Last week “Salvando Nuestras Vidas” provided an impressive presentation on the possible consequences of alcohol abuse, and especially the potential results of drinking and driving. Following a simulation on the school track, students and teachers were given the opportunity to hear from individuals who have faced considerable challenges in their lives. The following day, the Parent Talk, “Salvando Nuestras Vidas”, provided a conference for our parents that covered the same topics. This is a difficult topic to discuss and even think about, but it is something that we want our students to be aware of. It is our hope that opening the discussion will lead to relevant communication within families and between students on the dangers that are inherent in alcohol abuse and in drinking and driving. Our sincere appreciation goes to the Student Support Services for organizing this event, and to everyone who participated.

Don’t forget to join us for this year’s Environmental Fair on Friday, April 12, and check through the bulletin for other events that are relevant to you and your family.

Best wishes for a happy and safe Semana Santa holiday. We’ll see you all back at school on Monday, April 29!

Theft prevention campaign

Two months ago, we initiated our Theft Prevention campaign in ES, not only to get lost or stolen items back to their owners, but also to create conscience in the community and demonstrate our strong shared values. Over this time during the campaign, students, teachers and parents have turned in to the ES office with Miss Ana Paula, personal items, clothes, money and even jewelry that has been lost by someone and found by them. We have been keeping track of these items and posted many of them on the Theft Prevention online form. Up to this point in time, 47 cases have been registered, of which 77% were found items (showing a positive attitude by the JFK community to turn in lost belongings). Also, the campaign began having a positive effect the same day it was launched. We will keep the campaign as an ongoing one and we still have much to accomplish. One area we will work hard on after the vacation is children “playing” by hiding someone else’s belongings. Playing is two people having fun, and hiding something is not fun for the other person. Any children found doing this will have consequences.

Spring Break!

Hello Middle School Community,

Well, we have made it to Spring Break! This last week of school is full of events, from an amazing 8th grade field trip to Amealco on Tuesday to the Environmental Fair this Friday. Did you know that 7th and 8th grade students will take part in educational conferences about sustainability for this Environmental Fair for the first time ever? Special thanks to Miss Luza for organizing this. Eighth grade students will also be sharing terror stories about what may happen if we don´t begin our sustainability practices early and with intention. Imagine a world without potable water, or a world where the grass has been replaced by plastic straws!

I also want to recognize the work of our Model United Nations club that attended the event ALAMUN recently. In the words of MiddleMUN Historian Natalia Prado, “The John F. Kennedy School of Queretaro believes this was an incredible experience to learn and enjoy what we do best: debating. The delegates who attended had a great time and really enjoyed things like the food and dance, the snacks between breaks, the committee topic, and more. Another thing we enjoyed was the opening and closing ceremonies. The video, the speech, the prizes, and the organization of the event was something we really liked. We also enjoyed the school's facility and buildings as well as the committees since they were both interesting and challenging, something we appreciate in our school.” Great work, delegates! Special thanks to Miss Tania, Miss Raisa, and Miss Ana for organizing our school’s attendance.

I wish all of you a safe, restful, and fun Spring Break! See you in two weeks.

JFK TOK Talks

As part of our efforts to provide public platforms for our students to showcase their learning in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB DP), we are hosting our first annual “JFK TOK Talks” this year for the 11th Grade generation. TOK - the initials for our Theory of Knowledge course - is an exploration of the sources of truth in the world - how we know what we know and how certain we are of what we know. It is a challenging and enigmatic part of the IB Core that requires in-depth critical thinking and introspection.

One requirement for the course is a presentation exploring sources of truth in a real-life situation tied to an area of knowledge. This year, we want to make these presentations public in the style of “TED Talks” with the future goal of publishing and branding them on our various digital platforms. We might even be able to bring “TED Talks” to JFK at some point!

I would like to thank our 12th grade students for taking the first step in this direction through their public presentations in March and by many groups volunteering to have their presentations published on the JFK YouTube Channel!

To this end, I cordially invite all 11th Grade Parents to our “JFK TOK Talks” between Monday, May 20th and Thursday, May 25th. The presentations, recorded for the IB, will take place after school to create the most professional and authentic atmosphere possible for our students. Students will receive the presentation schedule shortly. The presentation schedule is divided into 2 hour shifts between 3:00-8:00, and we expect students to attend the entirety of their shift to support their classmates and learn from each other´s learning.

I look forward to our inaugural event and the opportunity for the generation to leave a legacy of learning for those that follow!
