Understanding the new Mission

It has been such a pleasure sharing our new Guiding Statements with everyone this year. There has been so much enthusiasm and encouragement across all sections, and from so many of you. This is how it should be, as the project to review our mission and consider our new direction really did involve so many parents, students and staff. Our combined efforts will help each of us work to build an even stronger school.

A Mission Statement should help us define our purpose and give clues to the kind of school we are. It should help us understand what it is that motivates us to come and work here every day. It should help students see the purpose and point of them spending so much time here, and it should help parents have an insight in to what kind of school we are, and what kind of learning environment we offer.

Our new Mission is: To lead, serve, and create beauty.
We are now working across the school to consider our daily efforts to align to this challenge, and to guide and support students to aspire to this too:
To lead is to be a critical thinker, be resilient and have a global vision.
To serve is to participate in building community, possess integrity, and to build ties in our communities.
To create beauty is to be inspired in everything we do, maximizing talents and celebrating different abilities.

I will soon be announcing the progress being made and I look forward to sharing with you as we work together to celebrate with pride the extraordinary results and beauty that all our children bring to this world.

“All glory comes from daring to begin.”

PowerSchool coming soon
Thank you for the continued patience as we continue to launch PowerSchool. To keep you up to date, teachers are using the platform familiarize themselves with it. Students will be getting access very soon, and after that we will make it available to parents. In the mean time, students will be writing the homework in the notebook in which they complete the assignments.

We are back to school, and boy it shows!

We are back to school, and boy it shows! Students are getting used to their new schedules, teachers are beginning to implement projects in their classes, and the weather is starting to change. As we begin our celebrations in September, there are a few events coming up that are of interest to Middle School.

I want to remind the students that Monday, September 10 is our first Flag Ceremony, and they all need to come to school using the Honors dress code: blue JFK pants and gray JFK shirt. (The blue jacket is optional.)

I invite the Middle School parents to join us on Wednesday, September 12, for a Parent Talk about tolerance in the home. On Friday, September 14, Middle School will join the rest of the school to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day with colorful clothing, performances of song and dance, and words designed to help us reflect about this significant holiday.

Finally, I extend a special invitation to the 6th grade parents to join me for a Coffee Talk on September 20 to learn about how teachers grade in the MYP!

Pre-season a new and successful initiative

For the first time ever, we had a pre-season sports program with high school students. Beginning on the second day of classes and lasting for two weeks, more than 60 students came to train in a variety of different sports.

This was an initiative that was well attended by very committed students.

Welcoming picnic!
Last Saturday, we gladly received many new families that are now part of our JFK community at our traditional “Welcoming Picnic”.
The guests had the chance to meet the school’s Leadership Team, do some integration activities along with our Sports Department and enjoy a delicious menu: hamburgers specially grilled by Jeff Lewis (Services and Operations Director) as well as dishes from different regions and countries that our new families shared with everyone.
Thank you to all those who participated for making this possible!
