Independence day at school!

On Friday, we will be celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day at school.
This is one of the greatest and proudest days on the Mexican calendar, and our school is no exception!

The celebration, ‘El Grito’ (the call for independence) as it is known, traditionally recreates the moment in 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla launched the fight that led to Mexico’s independence and freedom from Spanish rule after 300 years.

Thousands of indigenous and local people heard Hidalgo’s speech that night, and they joined Hidalgo’s army and marched to Mexico City to start the war.

At JFK, we will not be having a war, but we certainly will be having our own recreation of El Grito. The High School students have been working hard to prepare this celebration and will be leading a parade across the school to our flag ceremony, where they will repeat Hidalgo’s famous speech. This moment always generates a great feeling of the warmth, patriotism, and passion so symbolic of the culture of Mexico.

We all look forward to not only remembering the importance of this moment in Mexico’s history, but also joining the celebrations, the costumes, music, and food that accompany this day.

Our flag ceremony will be very crowded that day, but if you are new to Mexico, or even to the JFK, I invite you to come and see and join us for this event.

“Just living is not enough… one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.”
Hans Christian Andersen (1805 – 1875)

New school year...new projects

New projects to help to improve habits and to serve the community.

During this school year, we will be implementing a new program within Social Service to organize and administer our Lost and Found. The purpose of this project is to encourage care of personal objects and avoid unnecessary expenses at home to replace these items.

A team of 7th grade student volunteers will be working with Miss Paola to carry out this project. Students will still have the opportunity to look for lost items in an organized manner, once a week. The project is fascinating as students will be able to collect data about lost and found items, to improve habits and to serve the community.

Thanks, Miss Paola!

Student council leadership team 2018-2019

I would like to announce and celebrate our Student Council Leadership Team for the 2018-2019 school year!

President: Lilian Mendez Bolaños Cacho
Vice President: Javier LaFuente
Secretary: Cynthia García Jiménez
Treasurer: Cristina Quintanilla Cinta

As part of our leadership training for all students participating in Student Council, both Mr. Jacob and I modeled how to create team values based on shared commitments and recognition of individual styles. Leaders of Student Council also received training on how to create shared and collaborate agendas in Google Docs in preparation for carrying out future leadership tasks!

This year, our President Lilian and our Secretary Cynthia are working with a group of 32 other students in our Events Committee to design fun activities for students based on cooperation that unify our four high school generations. For their first event, the Events Committee chose a fellow high school student with the most Mexican spirit and pride to represent Miguel Hidalgo during the schoolwide flag ceremony on Friday and are organizing an Independence Day celebration on the high school patio. Congratulations to the Events Committee for getting everything organized so quickly!

Our Vice-President Javier and our Treasurer Cristina are working with a 10,000 pesos budget to design and implement a project to make the high school patio more creative, collaborative, and comfortable for students. This past week, they began discussing “pain points” in Design Thinking in the development of future empathy maps.

I feel very proud of the work of our Student Council this year and embracing new ways of working!

Firefighters campaign

As we do every year, the JFK community does a great job as it is the only school that collects items for the pantries of all Queretaro fire stations. So next week, from September 17 to September 21, this corresponding articles will be collected by each group:

We will be collecting your donations at the school entrance.

We thank you as always, for your support to continue with this annual campaign!

* Important Note: Do not bring donations to the classroom as we do not have staff to pick it up there. Thank You!
