Emergency lockdown drill

Friday’s Professional Development Day provided an opportunity for our staff to meet in collegial groups to enhance their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas. This year we have created learning blocks that combine teachers and staff from all four sections of the school and focus our attention to development in specific areas – Differentiated Technology, Teaching and Collaboration Strategies, and IB alignment. We have also included time for Wellness, Data Analysis, and topics that are specific to the individual areas. Feedback has been positive, and we are currently looking at how we will build on this year’s PD success in our planning for 2019-2020.

Last week we had a practice emergency lockdown drill as part of our continuing commitment to provide a safe environment for students and staff. Our emergency procedures are conducted to help keep all of us aware, and we know that the way we practice is the way we will respond in the event of a real emergency. We will continue monitoring our emergency procedures and making whatever adjustments are necessary for effectiveness and efficiency.

Please be sure to read the school sections in this Bulletin that apply to your family. We have several events coming up in February and we do not want you to miss anything!

4th Environmental Program April 12,2019

“Today's actions, tomorrow’s present”

This concept has to do with the “Antropocene Era”, where you and I are valuable protagonists in order to make a change, the decision is yours and mine.
We must act today for the sake of sustainability and the forecast of our future as a species, its.

The 4th Environmental Fair is the culmination of an educational process, constructed by many of the participants of our JFK community, JFK ECOCLUB , JFK VOLUNTEERS, TEACHERS, ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS, teacher support, Communications, PYP, Institutional development team, science and spanish group teachers, SWAS, members of administration and support personnel, as well as directors.

Society and economic development must internalize sustainability in their mission and vision, so that the extraction of resources from our environment is sustainable. We are many and we can get a lot done!

Middle School

Hello Middle School Community!

Part of our students’ leadership comes from making the right choices, and choosing to focus on school and academic improvements during the school day. Our section’s policy of no cellphones from 8:00 am- 2:30 pm is implemented for two purposes: to promote a safe and secure classroom, as well as to reduce the incidences of distractions during class.

Our students are safe if we know that images, videos, and other files of others are not distributed online via text, Instagram, or other file-sharing apps. In addition, we know that students are not immune to the temptations of cellphone “pick-ups,” which has been shown to distract from learning and participating in class. Since we are living in a such a fast-paced world of technological advances, we will begin to prohibit the use of headphones and smart watches, as well, since the functions of both are at odds with a safe and secure environment and a reduction in distractors. If teachers allow students to use their headphones to listen to educational videos or other files, I leave this up to the Middle School teachers’ professional discretion as to the educational value of such use.

As a team, all stakeholders can work together to ensure that our students’ education is our top priority.
Have a great week!

High School

"Four Corners"

On Friday last week during professional development, our staff worked on aligning unit planning in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years (IB MYP) and Diploma (DP) programs in support of our staff high school goals for the 2018-2019 school year. Using a dynamic called “Four Corners” that we will also begin to experiment in classrooms, teacher-leaders provided personalized support to other staff on the different aspects of unit planning we believe are important to fulfill our school mission, including conceptual teaching, inquiry-based learning, and criterion-based assessment. I like seeing our staff model collaboration even when we do not have students in school. Congratulations to all staff for a powerful and cooperative professional development day!

We are also starting our new online learning prototype for optativas in the coming week as we look for creative ways to expand our course offering without needing extra classrooms or space. I look forward to seeing the results from the first students in our prototype to see if it is a practice we will embed in the culture of high school in the future!
