Mexico’s Independence Day at school!

On Friday, we will be celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day at school.

This is one of the greatest and proudest days in the Mexican calendar, and our school is no exception!

The celebration, ‘El Grito’ (the call for independence) as it is known traditionally, re-enacts the moment in 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla launched the revolution that led to Mexico’s independence and freedom from Spanish rule after 300 years.

Thousands of native and local people heard Hidalgo’s speech that night, and they joined Hidalgo’s army and marched to Mexico City to start the war.
At JFK we will not be having a war, but we certainly will be having our own re-enactment of El Grito. The high school students have been working hard to recreate this celebration and will be leading a parade across the school to our flag ceremony where they will repeat Hidalgo’s famous speech. This moment always generates a great feeling of warmth, patriotism, and passion so indicative of the culture of Mexico.

We all look forward to not only remembering the importance of this moment in Mexico’s history, but also joining the celebrations, the costumes, music, and food that accompany this day.

Our flag ceremony will be very crowded that day, but if you are new to Mexico, or even to the JFK, I invite you to come and see and join us for this event.
