JFK College Fair

Last week we held our annual College Fair. I’m not sure when JFK started these Fairs, but when I joined here 20 years ago the school held the College Fair on the high school patio and about 5 universities came to talk to students during recess. This year we hosted 110 top universities from around the world including the UK, Australia, Europe, US and Canada, as well as the best local and national institutions!

The continued growth in interest in JFK students from so many universities and colleges is testament to the value of the education that all our students receive. When asking directly many of those attending why they wish to be here their answers are all very similar. They feel they can tell a JFK student from the crowds here (we open our doors to other schools as well) by their questions, their confidence, their clear understanding about what they need to know and of course, the quality of both English and Spanish. They also refer back to JFK alumni who came to them from earlier Fairs and left lasting impressions on them through their personalities or outstanding academic performance.

Our College Fair offers great opportunities for all our students and families. In one place, on one day, you can see the possibilities in so many settings and so many countries. It doesn’t mean either that all are attracted away from Mexico. One student told me “I was thinking of going to Canada, but now I can see there are lots of interesting places in Mexico too.” There are also those who ‘discover’ careers on offer that they have never thought about before, and take the chance to find out more before going home and seeing where else such careers are offered.

The College Fair is a way to help open doors and open minds to the possibilities that exist; there is no trickery into signing up on the day. A great many new contacts have been made and possible future decisions will be offering many of our students different paths that will lead to careers and lives they never thought about just last week!

Please make use of all the services on offer through our College and Career Counseling Services here on campus. It may be too early to make final career decisions, but it is never too early to find out where your interests lie. This is why 87% of the Class of 2019 claimed to have been accepted into their first choice of university, with 30% of them saving more than 10 million pesos in scholarships between them!

  • It’s Chess Week next week at the JFK! Chess is a world game, played since the 16th century. The first formal champion was crowned in 1886.
-Objective: Foment the understanding and playing of chess in ES students.
-Rationale: Chess stimulates cognition especially in attention, memory, intelligence, and analysis and chess increases self-esteem behind healthy competition and moving your pieces in teamwork
-Outcomes of chess: Chess helps math (concept of series) and science skills (with its organized thought and logic) , also chess promotes culture as a game played by millions all over the world and it increases logical thinking both abstract and concrete

Middle School
  • This Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19th, we will have Union & Peace XI. I am especially excited to welcome twelve 5th grade pages to our event, making this a true whole-school effort. Good luck, delegates and pages!
  • The Jaguar has arrived to Middle School, so be sure to say hi when you see him. Also, keep on sending in your suggestions for names!
  • I am so impressed with the student leadership groups at Middle School this year: Student Council has begun fundraising for the Dance, as well as an awesome campaign to help encourage teachers to exercise. National Junior Honor Society have organized an incredible Food Bank drive. Finally, House captains will be taking charge in preparation for our House Day on October 31st.
  • The first trimester ends on November 6th. Parents, please check PowerSchool with your child in order to be part of a united team with teachers. If your child has 0s, there are a few reasons why this may be: the work wasn't turned in by the due date, the work didn't follow instructions and therefore was ungradable, or the work was copied or plagiarized. You can help develop your child's self-sufficiency by asking him/her to consult with teachers, and you can also follow through with an email or a meeting.
