Bulletin #8 | October 23rd, 2019

Main Ofice
Last week, I was talking with a parent who mentioned that she was hearing the word ‘agency’ more and more at school and knew it was to do with PYP but wasn’t really sure what it meant. No one had ever really explained what it meant. As an educator, I have always been aware of how easily it seems for a new buzzword to spread across a school, and how rarely do we really stop and explain it to those that matter: parents and students. I hope I can put things right a little, at least in relation to this term, here on our bulletin.

Agency is not a new idea, nor is it exclusively PYP. Perhaps it is a more commonly used word at JFK now, but refers to the style of 21st century education we are continuing to work on and improve at JFK.

In traditional classrooms, the teacher was always the font of all knowledge, the judge of what was right and wrong, and the determiner of what was important to know and learn. Students were passive participants in school, trying to learn what they were being taught so that they could do well on the test later on.

Student agency is about helping the student become the one with the active role in the classroom and not the teacher. It is the student who is the agent in their own learning: making, creating, doing, sharing, thinking, collaborating and solving in ways that make sense to them personally. This is not really a new idea and follows something that we all know that we learn best when we are interested and when we can make connections to our own world and what has meaning for us.

Another phrase we use with similar meaning is to say it is a ‘student-centered’ approach, rather than ‘teacher-centered’. The teacher needs careful planning and acts as a facilitator in the classroom. The teacher raises student awareness, provokes interest and helps connect student passion for what is being discussed. We are not aiming just to help the students memorize facts and processes, but encouraging deeper thought and inspiration to consider the world on a much larger basis, helping them to find, access and use relevant information in ways that are meaningful to them.

This is how we encourage students to become ‘lifelong learners’, to have a mind set and the skills necessary to continue making sense of a changing and unpredictable world long into the future. By using agency, we can encourage creativity and connection and allow for learning that comes from deep within the students’ strengths and passions. This will last long after the words and facts taught by traditional teaching will have faded and become obsolete. Students with agency and ability to be self-inspired and self-directed will continue to be those who are capable of rising to the challenges of an unknown future.

  • Day of the Dead. We will celebrate the Day of the Dead on October 31st. All students should arrive with their parents to the Preschool Patio at 8:50. All community members are encouraged to wear a costume related to the Day of the Dead. There will be a short presentation and 3 interactive centers to encourage this beautiful Mexican tradition. Students will be dismissed after the event (about 10:30).
  • Grandparents Reading Days. We are excited to invite Grandparents, or other family members, to a special reading experience next week. Family members should arrive straight to the school Library where we will have story time and then free exploration with books. Reading is a great way to build family ties, so let’s start while we’re young!

  • Student Council. Last week we held our first Preschool Student Council. We discussed options of new games to play at recess time and students came up with 6 feasible options. The next day, they interviewed kids at recess to see which option was the most popular. Next week we will take action and implement some new games at recess. We are excited for all K3 students to have a chance to take part in the Student Council and make decisions for their school.

  • Here is the message of love and empathy about United Nations Day that the Pre-1st children shared in words and songs with 500 ES classmates and approximately 150 adults this past Monday:
    • The UN promotes peace, security, equality, and human rights for ALL.
    • The UN assists refugees, those suffering from poverty, and the hungry.
    • UN Day was created to bring people together from around the world.
    • No matter where you are from, or if you are big or small, everyone can make a difference; it takes just one small voice to change the world.

  • The sixth grade is doing a great job, overall, in taking care of their Chromebooks and following the rules for use. Remember that they are not permitted to use Chromebooks for activities other than education.
  • There is a Parent Talk this Thursday called “Hablando desde el corazón: la comunicación no violenta.” It's at 8:30 am in the Elementary Multipurpose Room. There is a $50 peso cost at the door.
  • Students have signed up for the material they are bringing for the House Altar decorations, and the list hanging outside Mr. Stuart’s office in case they forget.
  • The Day of the Dead Altars will go up during the school day on October 31st as part of our House Day activities. This year, we go back in time to Mexico’s arts and the Golden Age to honor Frida Kahlo (North House), Pedro Infante (South House), Maria Felix (West House) and Cantinflas (East House.)
  • Special thanks to the Parent’s Association for providing the Altar bases, marigolds, and photos of the honored dead.
  • I would like to congratulate all the delegates and chairs from Middle School Model UN who participated in Union & Peace XI this last weekend. The event was wonderful, full of rich debate and impactful resolutions. JFK was well-represented in achieving the extraordinary. Click here to see photo gallery
