This past Friday, the SWAS Coordinator, Tamara Clanin and SWAS English Teacher Ana Canto presented to JFK teachers about the SWAS program, SWAS student experience and how to think about academic language in their classes. Teachers especially appreciated hearing from our SWAS students to better understand their experience and how to support them in class.
Some highlights from what current and former SWAS students had to say:
What would you like to share with JFK teachers to help them better understand your experience as a student new to Mexico and to learning English and/or Spanish?
- We are trying our hardest to learn the language but sometimes we will not understand. Being patient helps us keep calm and keep trying to understand.
- Communicating with other students is difficult. I feel nervous when I ask questions to teachers.
- Japanese culture is very different from other countries. For example, here you have to assert your opinion. However, it is not a good thing to insist too much in Japan. So it's difficult for me.
- It was difficult for me at first to come to a new country with a new language, but it has been exciting to have such new and interesting experiences.
- I want to share my past and where I came from, this would help my teachers understand me better and my situation.
How have JFK teachers helped you feel welcome?
- The teacher talks to me every class
- Teachers make sure that we understand and can work to the best of our ability.
- They are kind to us and curious about where we come from and what we like.
- My teachers always made me feel comfortable. They were all very nice and encouraging.
- Teachers are sincere, kind and help me when I have any questions or when I don't understand something.
- They tried to share things or stories to learn more about each other, and allowed us to collaborate with each other.
What do you like about JFK?
- I like everything about JFK, for a new student it is a good school and I feel good to stay here.
- The students and teachers are friendly!
- How everyone is understanding and welcoming.
- I like that at JFK it's not like a regular school, where I feel like I can go to anyone with a problem and during breaks and lunch I can just go (almost) wherever I want.
- What I like about JFK is that the education allows us to show our creativity and the knowledge at the same time (IB curriculum).
- I really like the people and friendliness of the community. I like the teachers and in general the school.
- I really like that people here are very inclusive of people from other cultures. When I first arrived, I was incredibly stressed about being in a new school and learning another language, but people made me feel welcome very quickly.

El viernes pasado, la coordinadora de SWAS, Tamara Clanin y la maestra de inglés de SWAS, Ana Canto, presentaron a los maestros de JFK sobre el programa SWAS, la experiencia de los estudiantes de SWAS y cómo pensar sobre el lenguaje académico en sus clases. Los maestros apreciaron especialmente escuchar a nuestros estudiantes de SWAS para comprender mejor su experiencia y cómo apoyarlos en clase.
Algunos aspectos destacados de lo que dijeron los estudiantes actuales y anteriores de SWAS:
¿Qué le gustaría compartir con los maestros de JFK para ayudarlos a comprender mejor su experiencia como estudiante nuevo en México y para aprender inglés y/o español?
- Estamos haciendo todo lo posible para aprender el idioma, pero a veces no lo entendemos. Ser pacientes nos ayuda a mantener la calma y seguir intentando comprender.
- La comunicación con otros estudiantes es difícil. Me siento nervioso cuando hago preguntas a los maestros.
- La cultura japonesa es muy diferente a la de otros países. Por ejemplo, aquí tienes que hacer valer tu opinión. Sin embargo, no es bueno insistir demasiado en Japón. Así que es difícil para mí.
- Al principio fue difícil para mí venir a un nuevo país con un nuevo idioma, pero ha sido emocionante tener experiencias tan nuevas e interesantes.
- Quiero compartir mi pasado y de dónde vengo, esto ayudaría a mis maestros a entenderme mejor a mí y a mi situación.
¿Cómo te han ayudado los maestros de JFK a sentirte bienvenido?
- El profesor me habla en todas las clases.
- Los maestros se aseguran de que entendamos y podamos trabajar lo mejor que podamos.
- Son amables con nosotros y curiosos sobre de dónde venimos y qué nos gusta.
- Mis profesores siempre me hicieron sentir cómoda. Todos fueron muy amables y alentadores.
- Los profesores son sinceros, amables y me ayudan cuando tengo alguna duda o cuando no entiendo algo.
- Intentaron compartir cosas o historias para aprender más el uno del otro y nos permitieron colaborar entre nosotros.
¿Qué te gusta de JFK?
- Me gusta todo de JFK, para un estudiante nuevo es una buena escuela y me siento bien de quedarme aquí.
- ¡Los estudiantes y profesores son amables!
- Cómo todos son comprensivos y acogedores.
- Me gusta que en JFK no es como una escuela normal, donde siento que puedo ir a cualquier persona que tenga un problema y durante los descansos y el almuerzo puedo ir (casi) a donde quiera.
- Lo que me gusta de JFK es que la educación nos permite mostrar nuestra creatividad y el conocimiento al mismo tiempo (plan de estudios IB).
- Me gusta mucho la gente y la amabilidad de la comunidad. Me gustan los profesores y en general la escuela.
- Me gusta mucho que la gente aquí sea muy inclusiva con personas de otras culturas. Cuando llegué por primera vez, estaba increíblemente estresado por estar en una nueva escuela y aprender otro idioma, pero la gente me hizo sentir bienvenido muy rápidamente.
