High School 10th Grade Students Perform Slam Poetry

On the 6th of May, students from 10th grade had the opportunity to perform in the High School Patio during their lunch break with their beautiful poems in a slam poetry contest. Each participating student had previously won in their class presentation, there were at least 3 winners from each class , and they could decide if they wanted to present their poem to the school. The theme for the contest was that the piece had to be a slam poem , and it needed to be about a controversial topic about which the author is passionate about. All had different controversial topics; Ana Paola Alba who won first place wrote a poem about how unfair it is that society tells women to lower their expectations when really women are asking the bare minimum; Sofia Dominguez who won second place, wrote about body dysmorphia; Tamara Rey who won third place, wrote a poem about how words shouldn't affect anything or anyone; and then other students who performed talked about issues with the environment, war, the use of guns, the self and with society.

This was a very special event since it was an opportunity for students to speak up on topics that are not only current, but very important to talk about. Not only that, but during the event, the High School community could be seen and experienced through the students that cheered and participated in the event, which is a great indicator that even with the time online and current restrictions, students are still able to experience what it's like to have a community within school. This is very sincere because it showed not only solidarity within the community, but a great sense of mutual-support and camaraderie between students. Hopefully, more activities like this will be able to take place, but for now, congratulations to the winners and participants!
