School events
This year we have already had various school events, and as Fall and Winter approach the events become more frequent, and include many great traditions such as Thanksgiving, Day of the Dead and of course Christmas.
At JFK we always try to ensure a wide range of different events… some are new and some remain unchanged over time. These events help students to organize themselves, be creative, plan and participate. It also gives something to look forward to and to help the younger ones begin to appreciate culture and traditions.
Events are also very important for school and community spirit. Our Jaguar Day is a great example of this, with students joining together, to celebrate our school identity with the Jaguar mascot and the importance of sport in school life.
Good school spirit and a sense of membership are built in many ways and are the result of many factors. One of the key issues is for the students, staff and families to work together, across all sections, and forget our individual differences, to celebrate and enjoy the focus of the event. Breaking up the regular routine should not be seen as a loss of class time, but as a vital element of social significance for students. It gives the opportunity to make friendships beyond their normal classroom, and more importantly, allows students to share skills and abilities not often celebrated in a regular classroom, building their sense of true self-value.
So, even though our calendar looks full…. come to some of our events, share the magic in our children’s eyes, and remember that all of this effort really is helping our children learn to lead, serve and create beauty!
“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.”
George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950)

Physical Education week
It took place the Physical Education Week where our students learned the importance of taking care of their body and the benefits of exercising.
Activities like the Health Fair for Preschool, the presentations in Flag Ceremony, and the talks of Luisa Tagle,-our Athlete of the Year- and Dr. Andrés González de R., were a success as the children enjoyed moments full of knowledge, fun and teamwork.
Our students also participated in different activities planned during P.E. classes such as the Kahoot game, Jeopardy intramural tournament and Elementary activities with High School.
We are very grateful with all those who participated in the realization of this event.

Procedure for PowerSchool
This week we will be sharing with parents the procedure for PowerSchool. You will be able to see absences, homework, grades, and class news. I want to remind you that we are in the process of a shift from traditional grading to a more meaningful rubric style 1-4 grading scale. We have kept numbers from 50 to 100 there only so you parents can see more or less what the rubric grade would have been in the old system of grading. For example, a 3 on the rubric is approximately an 83 in the old system. However, it is NOT a numeric percentage (i.e. 3 out of 4 =75%). Instead, it is much more meaningful to see that a 3 means that your child is meeting the standards consistently and has developed the skills necessary for success in that subject area.
On Thursday, October 11, we will be offering a brief review of PowerSchool in the Library Media Center Computer Lab on the 2nd floor from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Afterwards a help desk will be available for individual questions.

Lifelong learning
Greetings Middle School families, students, staff, and friends!
What an awesome week! I am so excited to share with you how our teachers are setting the stage for lifelong learning. In 6th grade, students are using the inquiry process to learn about elements of Mesopotamia that we see today. They are also learning about collaborating on projects and presenting their findings, like showing us the anatomy of a honeybee. In 7th grade, they are imaginative, creating new countries to show understanding of the five themes of geography. Finally, in 8th grade, they are reflective, empathizing with Charlie while he is on his journey in Flowers for Algernon.
In addition the flurry of learning, we have the Jaguar Cup for Soccer this coming weekend. Go Jaguars!

JFK College Fair
Our 11th and 12th grade students responded amazingly to our JFK College Fair workshop registration process this year where they have the opportunity to experience different workshops from university representatives both from México and abroad before the fair opens. Thank you Monica for this innovation in our college counseling and JFK College Fair process!
And a reminder to all parents...the JFK College Fair is open to the public from 12:30-2:00 if you would like to attend or have time to speak with your teenager about what they saw and heard throughout the day.
We also had a fantastic turnout for our College Thursday with the University of California - San Diego. It makes me feel inspired to see so many students and parents taking advantage of these college opportunities!
I have a few thank yous for our community this week!
1) Thank you to the parents who attended the IB 11th Grade Coffee Talk last week for inquiring more into the program and helping us with our self-study for our five-year re-accreditation visit this fall. I learned a lot from listening to parents discussing our mission and that of the IB at the tables and appreciated parents taking the time to give us feedback!
2) Ms. Monica….thank you for a wonderful presentation on the JFK College Fair and College Counseling to our parent community!
