About our children performance

As we can all see, the mornings are getting darker and colder and this brings me to a concern I have every year. Talking to students, I find so many come to school without eating anything, and some without even drinking anything. Often they say they have money to ‘get something’ at school, but agree that no one ever really checks if they do or not.

Here are some reasons why I think all of us as parents need to take a little more care with our children before school in the mornings:

1. Increased energy: when your children wake up after a night without eating, and go to school without eating, they start the day with low blood sugar levels, and this keeps dropping until they do eat. This makes them feel tired and slow and feeling like this makes many children believe that they simply cannot cope with school in the mornings. Breakfast can help students feel alert and with enough energy to work well in classes until lunchtime.

2. Improved concentration: students who eat a healthy breakfast are shown to have better levels of concentration that students who do not eat anything. With better concentration, younger students are less likely to be distracted by their friends and get in to trouble in class, and even the older students are able to focus, understand, and remember better.

3. Improved grades: studies show that students who eat breakfast before school tend to score better on math, reading, and science. One study I heard about even suggested these increases could be as high as 25%! This is because breakfast provides the energy needed to increase cognitive, speed and problem solving skills.

4. General health: When we sleep our metabolism changes and breakfast starts its daily cycle of burning calories and absorbing nutrients. Studies show that children who eat breakfast absorb about 50% more iron and vitamins than children who wait to eat until later in the day. They also take in more fiber and have less fat and cholesterol kept in the body.

Tired children do not want to eat, they say they are not hungry, and would prefer that extra five minutes asleep.

It is our responsibility to see this and help them be healthier, even if that is not what they think they want.

That grumpy, tired child that you do not want to argue with in the morning because they are so slow? That is the same child you want to sit and work hard at math and reading just a few minutes later when they go through the school gate!

We send our children to school to get the best start in life, but then we forget to give them the best start each day!

JFK Library

Book Days

Next week the JFK Library is sponsoring several events we are calling collectively “Book Days”. This will include a scaled down version of the book fair, but it will be 2 fantastic vendors offering both English and Spanish. The venue has changed from years past. This year it will be in the Elementary Multipurpose Room, and will be open from 7 am to 4 pm. Feel free to send money with your students on Monday.

The entire library will be occupied with literacy-based activities, so, unfortunately, we can only accommodate students before or after school during Book Days. We are having a Poetry Slam upstairs for Middle and High School students. Downstairs, we have administrators and people in leadership roles reading to Elementary students on one end of the library. On the other end of the library will be the Grandparents Shared Reading event for Preschool.

On Halloween, the library staff will be dressed as characters from the same book. If students can guess the book, we will have candy. Students in 3rdgrade and above will have to name the book and the author (we encourage looking it up in the catalog if you don’t know).

Technology

PowerSchool training

Dear parents/guardians, our PowerSchool parent training during Thursday 11th, Monday 15th and Wednesday 17th of October was a success. As of today, we have a total of 875 registered parents accounts. 38% of the total amount belongs to parents with the PowerSchool app on their mobile device.

The invitation is out for those who don´t have an account as yet.

This week, a step by step guide will be sent out with information about the use of the app (mobile devices).

Thank you for your continued patience as we transition to our new student information system, PowerSchool.

PRESCHOOL

Halloween

We will celebrate Halloween on October 25th with a kinder kermess organized by the Parents´ Association. That day, we will follow our normal school schedule, with regular after school activities. Students do not come in costume.

Day of the Dead

We would like to invite you to an interactive morning to learn more about our Day of the Dead Traditions on October 31st. Please arrive directly to the Pre-School patio with your child for a prompt start at 9:00 am. Students will be dismissed directly following the event around 10:00 am. We encourage students to come in costumes related to the Day of the Dead.

Grandparents Reading Days

Reading is a beautiful way to build family ties. We would like to invite grandparents, or any family members, to come and read with us next week in the JFK Library. There will be a short presentation of a story, and then time for enjoying books with your little one.

Elementary School

Chess Week

It’s Chess Week at the JFK Elementary School!

Chess foments logical thinking, strategy building, thinking ahead, and paying attention to detail. Also, you need to be disciplined to have success at chess. Finally, even though it might seem to be an individual game, collaboration through a chess game is a great way for students to synergize and discover how others think. These very important skills taught through chess are some of the same skills we are teaching in our inquiry-based classrooms at JFK. If you don’t have a chess board at home yet, it is never too late to learn this important and fun game.

Middle School

A short week of activities

Greetings Middle School Community,

We are winding down the last part of October, and how time flies! We have a short week of activities planned:

• All week, MS students will be learning about the cultural and historical significance of Day of the Dead Altars in their Spanish classes. Then, there will be a beautiful otomi-themed altar going up in the Middle School patio next week. Thank you to the Parent’s Association for supporting us in this activity, and to Miss Lupita, Prof Angel, and Miss Maribel for integrating it into Spanish instruction.

• This Friday, October 26, is Professional Development Day. While our students sleep in, teachers will be learning more about how to create beauty in their classes.

• For Halloween on October 31, students are allowed to come to school in costume.

It’s important that these costumes are age-appropriate and do not interfere with learning. There will be normal classes all day, and during lunchtime, we will have a Costume Contest. Teacher judges will decide on the winners for Most Creative, Scariest, and Funniest.

I would like to recognize the hard work of all the Middle School chairs and delegates during a very successful Union & Peace last weekend. Our MiddleMUN advisors worked hard to prepare our students; thank you Miss Tania, Miss Raisa, and Miss Ana. Also, a shout-out to the women’s and men’s soccer teams for their victories in the Jaguar Cup. Gooo Jaguars!

Finally, I want to mention the hard work, dedication, and patience on part of Miss Gaby, Miss Paty, Mr. K, and Mr. Stuart in helping teachers, students and parents access PowerSchool. We are up and running; please remember that Kareem Cyrus, or Technology Coordinator, can help you if you are having difficulties.

10th Model United Nations

Wow! Last weekend, we hosted our 10th Annual Union and Peace MUN Event here on campus with over 500 students from around Mexico! To think….MUN started as a club in a single classroom over 10 years ago, and now we are the hosts of one of the most recognized MUN events in México, it is truly amazing. To our student leaders, you did an amazing and inspiring job with logistics, merchandise, and customer service at the event. I felt really proud having you represent JFK in front of schools from around the country. To Ms. Camille and Mr. Felipe... thank you for your countless hours and passion working with children! Next week, I will publish our Best Delegates and other honors!
