Why is reading important?

Very often, we take reading for granted and somehow assume it is something that happens naturally. Children will, regardless of educational opportunities, normally pick up language and speak as fluently as those with whom they interact on a daily basis.

Writing, of course, is something different, and those of us that attended traditional schools many years ago, have clear memories of learning to form letters and write, while grappling with punctuation, grammar and spelling all at once. It may not have been easy for all of us!

Reading is totally connected in to all language skills but is also something that we can all support our children to enjoy on a different level. At JFK, we understand that children should start enjoying books as soon as they learn to read. The more children enjoy reading, the more they read. The more they read, the more they will progress in a great many other areas of development: they learn to concentrate, build their imaginations, develop memory skills, and build better capacity to communicate. When parents sit and read with their children they help bond, strengthen the levels of confidence and trust and sense of value that needs to be built between parent and child. Those that had parents that gave time to sit and read, and to share nursery rhymes with them hold those memories close for all their lives. We can easily use reading to enrich the quality of life for our children and family.

At JFK we work hard to help build these skills, and look for interesting books to engage our students, and offer programs such as ‘JFK Reads’.

This week our students are having the opportunity to share in some new ideas stirring in our library! We have our first ‘Book Days’, instead of our traditional ‘Book Fair’. Taking less instructional time from the classrooms and concentrating on activities that are more specific we hope this dynamic will prove popular and successful. During these days, we will continue with our ‘Grandparents Shared Reading’, and we are adding a Poetry Slam and other activities for all grade levels.

We are working hard to develop our library and the collection of books that we have. No doubt, our library is one of the best in any of the local schools, and so we are planning to develop this further. A modern school library should be offering books and other reading materials, access to online resources, and comfortable places to sit and study, or to sit and read for pleasure. They should also develop programs and activities to support teachers in teaching these literary skills.

And above all, a modern library should be a place that encourages children to adopt a lifelong love of reading, the very basis of all we do in education. This is our work and our aim, and this year we are making great strides to make all of this possible for all our children!

Sports

Do you like speed?

Come and practice table tennis, also known as "ping-pong". It is a racquet sport that can be played individually or in doubles. It is an Olympic sport since Seoul 1988. According to a study conducted by NASA, it is the most difficult professional level sport, where the ball reaches speeds of 190km / hr. Several studies have shown that the practice of this sport improves, among others, the capacity and time of reaction, visual and motor coordination, concentration and memory.

If you are 9 years old or more:

We invite you to attend the table tennis workshops on the following dates:

- Saturday, November 17 - Saturdays 1 and 15 of December

The event will be at the JFK auditorium from 10:00 am - 11:30 am. Requirements: sportswear and a lot of energy to participate and have fun.

Halloween

Tomorrow is Halloween at the JFK!

While children love trick or treating and collecting sweets, what is even more important is that this day is an amazing opportunity to show creativity with their costumes and to participate in a wonderful community building experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Thank you to the parents who made this event possible by planning, working lots of extra hours on the activities, and volunteering at the event. Remember that it is an early dismissal at 11:30 hrs and teachers will stay to work on professional development. Then, please enjoy a safe long weekend with your families to celebrate Day of the Dead.

Middle School

A short week of activities

Greetings JFK Community,

In our Dress Code, we have a distinction between academic clothes and honors clothes. Every Monday in Flag Ceremony, our students show respect towards their civic duty by dressing in the gray JFK shirt, the blue JFK pants, and the blue JFK jacket. Now that it’s getting colder, it’s okay to wear a hoodie or sweatshirt under the blue JFK jacket. This way, visually the students are still unified by one uniform during Flag Ceremony, however we can all still keep warm.

I want to congratulate our Student Council for sponsoring the Halloween Parade & Costume Contest this Wednesday, October 31 at lunch. Miss Lupita and the members of our Student Council will ask teacher judges to recognize special costumes. Please make sure the costumes are age-appropriate and do not distract from learning, as we will have a normal class schedule all day.

Finally, the month of November has many events that I will be announcing in the coming weeks, however I want to give Middle School parents a special invitation to a Middle School-only workshop led by Juan Manuel Onate: “¡Sorpresa! Me cambiaron a mi hij@,” on next Thursday, November 8th.

I hope that you enjoy this long weekend with your friends and loved ones, and we will see you in November!

High School

Our committees

We have a number of important innovations and trends coming together this week that reflect our new direction in high school based on our JFK Mission and Vision - lead, serve, and create beauty. Our two Student Council Committees - Design Thinking and Student Events - merge together this week as our Student Council Design Thinking Committee prototypes an initiative called, “Motivational Mornings.” Based on identifying our early start as a “pain point” for both students and faculty, they decided to start a campaign where on the last Monday of each month, Student Council will provide different beverages, breakfast foods, and funny memes so everybody starts the day with good vibes and a sense of community.

At the same time, our Student Events Committee is designing a completely student-organized Halloween celebration based on two criterion - the celebration must be cooperative and unify the four generations of high school. Our 12th grade leaders of Student Council have done just that by designing Halloween themes based on group letter; 9A, 10A, 11A, and 12A all have a common theme for example so we encourage inter-generational cooperation. They are also planning a pumpkin carving session as well as a “scare contest.”

Thank you to all students participating in these committees for being co-responsible for leading, serving, and creating beauty and creating a positive environment in high school this year!
