Flu Campaign

Hopefully last week you received my message about the flu and our campaign for this year. For the last couple of years we have worked hard to keep the number of students suffering as low as possible and we have done very well. However, it is inevitable that some of us will get sick, so let’s all work together to help keep the community as safe as possible.

Here are our top tips to staying well:
• Eat a good breakfast and wrap them up warm to come to school.
• Have the flu shot (you can check this advice with your doctor if you are unsure). We will be providing access to this at school to make it easier for those that wish to have it
• Wash your hands often
• Cough and sneeze in to your elbow or a tissue
• Stay home if you are sick, and speak with your doctor
• Remember that parties, cinema and social activities in public are just as likely to be causes of contamination as the school where we monitor every case.

I will keep everyone posted on the website and through an official school email of any developments or formal requests to close classrooms or the school. If you receive such notices in WhatsApp…. Please check for fake news by looking at the website or checking for my email before sharing the message with others…. Don’t help irresponsible people have fun by spreading panic!!!

Theater

School of Rock -The musical brings the power of rock to JFK!

Based on the iconic, hit movie, this irresistible new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a bit of extra money by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious school. There, he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. However, will he be able to get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out? Find out on November 27 and 28, in the JFK auditorium with two daily performances: reception at 17:30 and performance at 18:00 hours or reception at 19:30 and performance at 20:00 hours. Don´t miss it!

Vaccine Application JFK – 2018

Dear JFK community:

We have asked Asesores en Emergencias (the company that manages the JFK Medical Service) to provide the tetra-Valent vaccine for influenza to any members of our community who want to be vaccinated. This vaccine that they will administer on campus is completely voluntary and will have an associated cost.

The application of the vaccine is not obligatory and the school has no responsibility over the administration or management of such vaccines, but Asesores en Emergencias has managed it appropriate in the past.

You should also know that a tri-Valent version of the vaccine is available for free in the public sector. We can provide further information in the Medical Services where the free vaccine is available.

If you want the vaccine applied to you or children, please fill out the following form and pay online for each person that will be vaccinated.

People over 8 years of age need a single dose at a price of $680 pesos and children below 8 years of age require two doses, each one a month apart. The price for both doses is $1300 pesos.

You must notify about your requirement for the vaccines before November 9th, 2018 Asesores en Emergencias personnel will be programming the administration dates directly with those requiring it by email or phone.

If you have any questions you can email [email protected] or dial 2184424 ext. 108

Day of the Death

Thank you for your participation at our Day of the Dead festival last Wednesday. It was a wonderful way to learn more about the Mexican Traditions and build community at the same time. Since it was a new event this year, we welcome suggestions for how to improve it in the following years.

Extracurricular Activities

JFK students who are involved in extracurricular activities tend to have higher self-esteem and stronger connections to our school. However, an overloaded schedule with too many activities can have the opposite effect, leaving your child—and you!—stressed. Keep these tips in mind for managing your child’s activity load:

-Aim for a maximum of three activities (perhaps one social activity, one physical activity, and one artistic activity). To avoid burnout, keep involvement in any one activity to just a day or two a week, unless your child absolutely begs for more.

-Although following your child’s interests is important, introduce your child to something new, whether it’s a new sport, a musical instrument, or something else.

-No matter what your child is interested in, remember that your job as a parent is to be supportive. The point of activities is to expand your child’s interests and abilities, not to transform him or her into a child prodigy or the next Ronaldo.

-Schedule downtime and family time. Children need time to play— but an overloaded schedule prevents that. Make sure that when the day is over and the homework is done, there’s still time for your child to be a kid to play and read books of their choice. Make sure there’s room in your schedule for family time. Children need to have meals with their parents, hear bedtime stories, share chores, and play games as a family (like chess).

Extra-curricular activities can help our JFK children learn and grow, but remember that balance is the key.

Middle School

¡Sorpresa! Me cambiaron a mi hij@.

Greetings JFK Middle School

I hope you had a restful long weekend with family and friends! We have an exciting event this week for Middle School parents only, “Sorpresa! Me cambiaron a mi hij@.” Please see the image below for more information.

The National Junior Honor Society has begun their annual food drive, and we ask students to please bring in bags of rice, beans, and sugar. I would like to thank Mr. Caleb Ulliman for his guidance in these efforts! The food drive ends on November 22, so be sure to bring in your donations soon.

This is also our final full week of classes before the end of the first trimester on November 14. Please check with your child about his or her grades; you can access a report on PowerSchool. If you need assistance, please contact Kareem Cyrus [email protected]. We encourage your child to show responsibility by approaching his or her teachers when there are doubts about grades; this kind of direct communication prepares our young ones for adulthood.

I would like to thank Miss Lupita for the awesome Halloween festivities during lunch last Wednesday, and the Parents’ Association for the delicious pan de muerto and hot chocolate. The costumes were great!

Committees events

To the Student Council Events and Design Thinking Committees:

Wow! It has been great watching you embrace co-responsibility this semester as we take ownership of our learning and environment. The Halloween celebration on the patio was amazing. You met all my expectations and more! You chose inclusive themes in which all students could participate and organized the themes by group letter to bring all four generations together. The pumpkin carving contest - stunning! Music concert - a beautiful touch! I can’t wait to see what our new Student Field Day will look like on December 7th!

And...Motivational Mondays was a big hit! It really did change the feel on the patio Monday morning when Student Council had warm food and different beverages available for students to fill a mug up with. Thank you for your belief in Design Thinking and yourselves in carrying out this project!

I would also like to thank all faculty for their amazing work to complete our 5 Year Self-Study for re-evaluation of the IB Diploma program. It required a full day’s work on the professional development day, and it was great to see the entire team come together!
