Flu Campaign

Thank you to those who have noticed that our flu campaign has started and have taken extra precautions to keep sick children at home.

At school, our first filter is the daily reminder at every school entrance. We have now added some fun posters to help us remember what to do to keep healthy, and we have also added automatic hand gel dispensers to help us all keep from bringing the flu to school.

Children who do arrive at school clearly suffering are seen by our doctor who takes the decision to let them stay or to send them home.

Every day from now until the end of the flu season the school reports to the health authorities all confirmed cases of influenza on campusl and we follow any advice that they may give.

As a school, we are also in regular contact with SEP for any concerns or actions required. Mexico does, in fact, have a very effective system for managing flu since the H1N1 issues that brought Mexico into the spotlight about ten years ago.

So far, we have had zero children arriving at school suffering symptoms needing to be sent home.

With our extra care at school, and the extra attention from all parents, we hope to keep these numbers as low as possible!

I will keep the community up to date on this website and by email from time to time, so that we can all be aware and not worried by news reports that may not relate to our own school experiences.

Toy Campaign

Dear Community,

We are thankful for your participation every year. The children that receive your help in the Sierra, are equally thankful. Please find a toy in good condition, for your kid to share with a child their age. Reflect upon their solidarity and the fulfillment they will feel when sharing with others to have a better society.

We will be receiving it from the 20th to the 23th of November. You can leave it in our entrance of our school. If you have any more used clothes and accessories, they will be well received.

Thank you!

Thanksgiving

The Parents’ Association is planning a meaningful event for our students this Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving. They will be visiting classrooms to explain the meaning of the holiday and help us all to practice giving thanks for the many blessings that we have in life.

Parent -Teacher Meetings

We are excited to welcome parents to individual meetings with their child’s teacher this week and next week. It is a difficult task to plan 230 conferences in only 8 days, so we ask that you help us out by arriving to your conference on time.

Advantage of PowerSchool

One of the advantages of PowerSchool is that parents are informed in real time about the academic development of their children. When you sign in on your device using the app or through the webpage, you can easily see the grades for each subject, assigned homework, absences, incomplete work, etc. This school year, as a Green School, the JFK no longer prints report cards or uses SESWEB to access report cards. Starting this November 16th, you can access PowerSchool to see exactly what grade your child received during the first trimester. If you need a printed report card, please visit or call Student Records to request it.

Developing Leadership

Part of our new mission is “to lead,” and our young students are showing that they are developing leadership every day here at Middle School. Leadership looks very different, depending on the context in which it shines, however, usually for young adolescents; leadership is inspired by meeting the adults and experts who work for a better world.

Leadership is apparent within our extracurricular clubs and activities. In Social Service, students are leading one another to carry out creative, long-lasting service habits. Their work is linked to that of Magnolia Hernández, a social anthropologist, and María del Carmen Pérez, a social psychologist, two of the founders of the organization Raíz Mujer that provides scholarships to indigenous girls in Amealco. In the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), the students are exploring the element of compassion within leadership by working with Ángela Quintana, the director of the local food bank, Alimentos para la Vida.

All of this leadership couldn’t be possible without the modeling and opportunities that our teachers provide to students on a daily basis within the classroom. Last week, 7th grade Biology students enjoyed learning from a current leader in his field, Dr. Óscar García, and discussed plans of action for citizen scientists to help track monarch butterflies. In 8th grade Spanish, students interacted with cutting-edge research about sociolinguistics here in Mexico, discussing metaphors and context with Lili Hernández ,and the work she did with Judith Subas.

In our globalized world, providing students with the perspectives of those researchers who are active in the field is a powerful way to create feelings of interconnectivity, belonging, and leadership.

The project involves painting the patio, buildings, and public spaces all day on December 7th. Student Council is also organizing other activities (cooperative games) to complement the JFK Canvas project so all students have engaging activities throughout the day.
