Our programs

In order to help parents understand the value or content of some of our conferences and presentations, we have developed two distinct programs with very different aims.

Parent Talks
These conferences have been programmed to follow the recommended subjects offered to us by parents. The speaker at each Parent Talk is an expert from outside the school invited to come and share with us. The themes we look to cover are aimed at helping parents learn about the world our children are living in. Children today have to learn to manage a world that seems to be dominated by the internet and social media. Older children seem to have more pressure to drink alcohol, take drugs, or face other confusing realities in the modern world.
Many of these issues are things that we never dealt with as children ourselves and have little or no understanding. At each Parent Talk, the guest-speaking expert will offer tips for parents and answer questions to help us support our children as they grow.

These Parent Talks are open to all parents, and we invite you to bring friends who may have children in other schools. Our aim is to help and protect children by helping their parents. Some parents of younger children ask if they can attend talks on more mature subjects and the answer is yes, we are happy to! Your children will all grow through all these stages so why not learn and be more prepared!

Coffee Talks
Coffee Talks are aimed more at academic or school-issues. The speakers are usually the principals and/or other staff. Subjects include issues such as how we grade students, how to use PowerSchool, understanding our new IB programs etc. Each announcement for these Coffee Talks will advise of the subject, the speaker and the grade level or section that it is relevant to. These would not be of interest to parents in other sections or grade levels, and are sent by email to the relevant section of the community.

Come, have a coffee, and enjoy informal talks to learn about how your children are learning! Coffee talks are happening in every section of the school!

I hope this has helped clarify the differences between the intentions, subjects and potential audiences for both parent Talks and Coffee Talks. I hope that we can continue to attract even more people to these events that are all designed to help you as parents build a closer and more understanding connection to your children as they grow on their journey through childhood and adolescence.

Theft Prevention Campaign: January 14-February 14

Things go missing during the school year and sadly, sometimes do not make it back to their owner. Sometimes children can be forgetful and lose things, but other times children take things that don’t belong to them. This is in direct contradiction of our JFK school values of respect and honesty. Children who steal will have strong and logical consequences. Though it is a very small percentage of students who steal, when they do, it negatively impacts the entire JFK family. As a caring community, we will continue to work together on this important issue that affects all of us.

Here are a few of the Action Steps that we will take during the campaign. Teachers will work with students to be sure that they are taking care of their belongings, locking classrooms and responding immediately to potential theft. The concepts of empathy, responsible telling, impulse control, immediate gratification, and respecting other’s belongings will be highlighted in the Character Education class. A committee of students and parents will be formed to work with Student Council to promote the campaign. At Flag Ceremonies, they will present ideas and role plays about stealing. Students will be informed that severe and logical consequences will be applied if they are caught stealing. Any JFK student who steals is not representing our values or mission statement and they could be expelled from the school. All 600 students will be taught to “Say Something” when they see an action that could be stealing. We will work with parents to know exactly what to do when something is lost or stolen so that we can try to get the item back to its owner. The campaign will be a nice lead up to Friendship Day and showcase the strong values we share as a community. Thank you for the support.

Middle School

Activities

Dear Middle School community,

Our first week back culminated in an exciting Mathcounts competition held on Saturday. Our Mathcounts team competed with students from the ASF in problem-solving relays, collaborative exams, individual exams, and head-to-head lightning rounds. What is more beautiful than the feeling of having solved a quadratic equation with your teammates in record time? A special shout-out to our sixth grade volunteer organizers! Congrats, Mr. K.!

Speaking of our school’s mission, the level of service is constantly increasing in our students’ everyday activities. They are digging deep into the Social Service projects: the 8th graders hosted a Cake Contest before the holidays, the 7th graders recently chose the Project Team Leaders, and the 6th grade has shown their creativity in dog-walking, bake sales, and other enterprises designed to provide scholarship money to indigenous girls in Amealco. Thank you, Miss Paola and the Humanities teachers for coordinating this effort.

Also showing service and leadership, some of our National Junior Honor Society members will be visiting the Food Bank this week after school. What a fantastic way to understand where our food drive efforts lead to...congrats Mr. U!

Our MiddleMUN students will be attending Colegio Fontanar’s CFMUN Fifth Anniversary event Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after school. The amount of work our delegates put into preparing for debate and representing their assigned countries truly reflects leadership in our school and in the community. Thanks, Miss Tania, Miss Ana, and Miss Raisa for helping our delegates give their best!
